Alice and Wonderand – Femenism and Girl Power
For those who have not seen the movie Alice in Wonderland or Alice in Underland, as this is the sequel to C. S. Lewis Carroll proposed; this may be a spoiler or perhaps a view into the mind of Tim Burton. From the beginning of the movie, you are taken into the world of yesteryear. A time when women had the “Lament of the Corset”; other movies from that time period also give us a glimpse that remind us of the cruelty that women had to endure as they were constrained by the corset because of patriarchal expectations. While she is traveling by carriage to a gala that turns out to be a public engagement (to her surprise later on) to a guy named Hamish, we discover that she hates corsets, in fact stockings altogether. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) whom is 19 year old, likens the corset as if to wearing a codfish on your head. That is not proper, why would someone else wear one on their head? To her, a corset is like a codfish.” In Pirates of the Caribbean, Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) tells Capt Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) “You like pain? Try wearing a corset,” when they meet after he saves her from drowning.
